Wow…today meeting was a wonderful meeting for me! We started our final test by class teaching once again in micro teaching laboratory. And….as you knew, I got the second lottery. This meeting was my judgment. Ha…ha…ha….
I taught speaking skill for junior high school student, grade VII semester one. It was a big challenge for me. First, I did not understand well junior high students’ ability in learning English. Then, should I use Indonesian or English or Indonesian or combination? I confused also about the proportion of them.
Next, I would also to answer some questions given by Mr. Prast for my first progress test in this reflection.
- I decided this content because it is suitable enough for junior high school students in first grade and semester. I have considered this content with the curriculum.
- I fit the content with the competences the students are expected to achieve by give them more time for speaking practices. I have made a lesson plan that I considered suitable for them. I also tried to arrange an interesting topic introduction and material handout for my students.
- I knew students had the prerequisites knowledge, skills, and competences to be successful in this unit by doing brainstorming activity and also from their experiences in introducing themselves and other.
- I used the instructional strategies I selected because I want to create a learner-based study. I hope that students can be more active by this.
- I knew if students achieved the intended competences from their group discussion responses during the learning process.
- I saw inductive pattern in my teaching. I gave students the example of introducing people then I asked them about the expression using in introducing people.
- What worked in this lesson are my interaction and communication with my students. It is very difficult for me, but finally I could do it although it still not optimal. I also made some improving from my first progress test in my final examination. For example, I could improve my self confidence. I felt more relax than my previous teaching examination.
What did not work in this lesson was mastering the materials, class management, and time management. I also had lack of preparation. The most difficult thing was class management. Huh….it was unpredictable situation. My students were very crowded. They were busy about themselves. They fought each other. Ohhh…., my God, my universe! Actually, I very shock about this situation. In my opinion, it is good to follow students’ willing as long as the goal of the learning is achieved. Unfortunately, I have not found the best strategy to solve that. Even, the main activity in my lesson plan is not done.
- If I were to teach this lesson again, off course, I would do different thing. I will teach my students with better preparation. I will improve my teaching based on my reflection and also from the comments given by my observers.
In the end of microteaching class, Mr. Prast distributed the result of our first progress test. And…….. You know, I was shocked again. I got a very non satisfaction result. Oh, Universe…! What should I do? I have done my final examination. So… does it mean that no chance anymore.
